One day a week, I wake up insanely early and go to my beloved writers group at 5:30 a.m. Why do I do this? Because I meet the most creative, fun and amazing people. And I truly love getting to know different kinds of people. I know I am a people person. My step-dad was a professional personality profiler for Fortune 500 companies and I have taken more personality tests than I can count. The discussion of personality tests came up in my writing group because one of the writers uses personality tests to profile her fictional characters to make sure that she writes with continuity (which is brilliant by the way). A psychology major in the group just so happened to have a link to a free Meyers-Briggs personality test, so just for fun we all spent five minutes and took it and showed each other the results. (Click here if you would like to take it).
In this particular test, I am an ENFJ (see one description here – there are many out there) an extroverted intuitive thinker which basically means that I am a people person and I can read and respond to people really well. It also means I can see the big picture, but sometimes get bored on the journey. Knowing how you tend to be is extremely helpful when you are goal setting and holding yourself accountable. But, I would like to caution everyone here that just because you have been profiled or typed a certain way does not mean that you can’t change, grow, or overcome.
The beauty of life is that you can decide who and what you want to be and what you want to do with your life. Play up your strengths, work on your weaknesses, and find someone you admire to mentor you along the way. I hate the saying, “find yourself” because you are constantly evolving. I like “create yourself” better. But be careful not to become too self-focused, make sure you are bringing your loved ones along with you on your journey. Your gifts are best used in the capacity to make the world around you a better place. How are you using your strengths to create an abundant life for yourself? If you don’t know what they are, take some time to find out!
